Today’s guest on our Advisors Circle is Emily, who’s here to share her awesome modifications to the Liesl + Co. Neighborhood Hoodie pattern. She’s also bringing along some insights from her recent sewing projects with Girl on the Go. Let’s hear what she has to say!

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to be sharing this quick and easy micro-hack with you all today. Liesl recently posted an image showing a pullover-style hoodie with a crossover hood, and I couldn’t resist giving it a try. The result is something I think you’ll love!
The beauty of Liesl + Co. and Oliver + S patterns lies in their grid system, which makes adjustments like this incredibly straightforward. To create the crossover effect, I extended the front of the hood piece by about two inches. In hindsight, I’d probably go for three or four inches next time to ensure a better overlap—my initial attempt resulted in a subtler crossover due to not accounting for the seam allowance properly. Still, I managed to freehand the curve by approximating the shape.
Following the original pattern instructions, I attached the hood in place of the front neckband. Super simple! One thing I did differently was to incorporate a contrasting fabric for both the center of the exterior hood and the entire hood lining. It adds a nice pop of interest and highlights the three-piece construction beautifully. Another cool detail I kept was the high-low hem, which gives the hoodie a slightly dressier look compared to standard sweatshirts.
For context, I wore this Neighborhood Hoodie with my Extra Sharp Pencil Skirt during a warmer day last week. Now that the weather has cooled off, I’ve been pairing it with jeans or leggings. It’s versatile enough to work across seasons!

A quick edit before I wrap up: If you’re interested in modifying this pattern yourself, here are a couple of tips. First, you can absolutely sew the hood as-is without altering the existing pattern, ensuring the edges align perfectly at the center front. The crossover is just an optional design tweak. Second, if you want to convert the hoodie into a pull-on version while retaining features like princess seams and the front pocket, simply treat the Center Front lines on pieces 6, 7, and 8 as Cut on Fold lines. This allows you to remove the zipper while keeping the pattern’s intended silhouette.
I hope these suggestions help inspire your next project! Cheers to creativity and fun in sewing.
