Welcome back, Meagan! It's always great to have you share your insights with us. Over the years, you’ve shared fantastic tutorials like how to add ruffled sleeves to a t-shirt, along with stunning patterns such as the Marbled Yoke Hide-and-Seek Dress and the Faux Chenille Yoke version. Plus, you’ve introduced us to your beloved Oliver + S patterns. Today, you’re taking us on a virtual tour of fabric shopping in your hometown, Phoenix. Thanks so much for joining us today!
When you shop for fabric abroad, you’ll quickly notice that sewing terminology doesn’t translate easily. To help make things smoother, we’ve developed the Sewing Translator, which many of our readers have found invaluable. It’s now available in 14 languages, and if you own an iPhone or iPad, you can download the app to use offline. We hope it proves useful for you too! You can find it for free in the Apple App Store.
Let’s dive into Phoenix, known as the “Valley of the Sun.†The summers here are intense, with temperatures often soaring above 115°F. While it’s technically a dry heat, it’s still hot—period. But during fall, winter, or spring, the weather is simply gorgeous. Many people flock here seasonally from colder climates to escape the snow. As the fifth-largest city in the U.S., Phoenix offers a unique desert landscape and a rapidly expanding downtown scene.
One of my absolute favorite spots to explore is SAS Fabrics Superstore. The name itself suggests a treasure trove, and it certainly lives up to its promise. This massive warehouse is packed with every fabric imaginable, from silks and satins to knits and quilting cottons. You’ll also find notions, trims, and foam aplenty. It’s easy to lose track of time wandering through endless aisles of fabric rolls and boxes. Whether you're into fashion or quilting, SAS has something for everyone.
If you're more into quilting fabrics, 35th Ave Sew and Vac is another must-visit. This family-run business stocks a wide range of quilting fabrics, notions, and even sewing machines, from beginner models to industrial-grade embroidery machines. Their thread selection is incredible—they might as well have more varieties than their fabric offerings! They also host regular events and sewing workshops, making it a vibrant community hub.
Lastly, there’s another SAS store, not to be confused with the first one. This location specializes in unique fabrics that you won’t find at typical chain stores. The selection is vast, and every visit feels fresh, thanks to new arrivals. However, it has a more industrial vibe, so be prepared to rummage through boxes or browse through shelves stacked high with trims. If you spot something you love, consider buying it right away since it might not be there next time.
While Phoenix may not boast as many traditional fabric shops as larger cities, the ones we do have are exceptional. Each offers a distinct shopping experience, and I guarantee you’ll walk away with something truly special. Next time you’re in the area, don’t miss these hidden gems!
As always, happy sewing! And remember, whether you're crafting in Phoenix or beyond, the Sewing Translator is there to help bridge those language gaps. Stay creative, and we can't wait to see what you make next!
Until then, take care and keep stitching!
